Course Policies
Attendance: Attendance is expected at all class meetings. Excused absences will be granted either with prior approval, with written confirmation of a medical condition, or through official college permission. Students will be allowed to make up missed quizzes only in the case of excused absences. Two unexcused absences are allowed during the course of the semester with no penalty. Each subsequent unexcused absence will result in a 2% deduction from the final grade for the course.
Performances: You are asked to attend the performance by Anonymous 4 at the Norton Center , Monday, November 20, at 8:00 PM .
Communication: I will check my e-mail on a daily basis, and will make every respond to all e-mails within 24 hours. I ask that you also check your Centre e-mail account at least once a day in order to stay abreast of any announcements or unexpected changes.
Class participation: Students are expected to come to class prepared to discuss the readings and compositions previously assigned. Full participation in class discussion is an important component of the final grade.
Quizzes: Most weeks, there will be with a relatively short quiz (the detailed schedule is given below). These will take the form either of short-answer quizzes, with questions drawn from the assigned readings, or “needle-drop” listening quizzes, in which short recorded excerpts from the assigned listening will be played, and students will be asked to identify the composer, piece, genre, and approximate date of composition (answers within ten years will be accepted). For the short-answer quizzes, pay special attention to the “Key Terms” listed at the end of each chapter of the textbook. In preparing for the listening quizzes, you should listen to each piece multiple times, following along in the score (usually in your anthology) at least once for each piece.
Assignments: There will be two analysis assignments, one on the fugue and another on the sonata. These will take the place of your quizzes, i.e., there will be no quizzes on the Mondays that are assignments are due.
Exams: There will be a final exam, consisting of a combination of short answers, short essays, and “needle-drop” identification of previously assigned pieces.
Presentation: Each student will be asked to give a twenty-to-thirty-minute oral presentation on a composition of his or her choice, which must be approved by the instructor. This presentation may take the form of a close analysis, or it might instead explore issues of biographical concerns, historical context, or performance practice.
Paper: Each student must complete a five-to-ten page paper on a topic of his or her choice, chosen in consultation with the instructor. As with the presentation, this paper may be analytical or contextual in nature. In accordance with Centre College policy, papers will be submitted via www.turnitin.com (Class ID number: 1588126, password: centremusic). If you have not done so already, you will need to set up a user account. Please contact me if you have any trouble navigating the site. You may submit your papers at any time, but no later than December 8, which is the last day of the exam period.
