TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Assistant Professor , Centre College, 2006–present

Participated in teaching core humanities curriculum; helped lead workshop for full humanities faculty on incorporating Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro into the humanities sequence, beginning this year.

Designed and taught upper level course, Music and Romanticism , investigating nineteenth-century music in the context of contemporary aesthetic, literary, and philosophical currents.

Designed and taught seminar Folk Music of Kentucky , introducing Centre students to the rich and diverse tradition of local music, and inviting musical guests from throughout the region.

Taught music-history sequence for majors.

“World Music” Experience

Lead Centre College World Popular Music Ensemble, a seventeen-piece group performing music from Zimbabwe, Ghana, The Dominican Republic, Trinidad, Ireland, and other musical cultures (2006–present)

Served as arranger, composer, singer, instrumentalist, and group leader for Yale-sponsored eight-piece meringue/pop/funk ensemble (2004–2006)

Studied Turkish ud with Münir Nurettin Beken (2000–2001)

Studied African “Palm-Wine” Highlife guitar performance with eminent Ghanaian guitarist Daniel “Ko Nimo” Aponsah (2000)

Performed as guitarist with Bertram Levy's Tango Quartet (1994–1995)

Performed as a drummer and singer with Macalester College African Music Ensemble, directed by Ghanaian Master Drummer Sowah Mensah (1988–1992)

Have sung in a wide variety of vocal ensembles, both within and outside of universities, ranging from large and mid-sized choruses to small a capella madrigal groups, including Macalester Festival Chorale, University of Washington Chorus , and The Port Townsend Madrigal Singers.

Performed solo classical guitar pieces by Sor, Villa-Lobos, Brower, Bach, and others; played First Guitar in the Macalester College Guitar Ensemble.
